It's silly how the stores are falling over each other to sell Half-Blood Prince cheaper than anyone else - according to my boss Bloomsbury aren't cutting any special deals with the multiples - the cheapest a retailer can get it for is 7.65 - so the shops selling it at £8.00 are making 35p & Kwik Save (£4.99) are losing an enormous £3.01 per copy.
The regular bookshops must long for a return to the days of the old Net Book Agreement at times like this...

I guess Kwik Save are relying on making more than £3 from other sales while people are in their shop.

Amazon, who were selling it at £8.99, plus postage, are probably relying on just shipping enough of them that the £1.34 profit adds up. IIRC, they mentioned on one of the news programmes last night that they were shipping 1.5 million copies out today - I don't know if that's just the UK, or Amazon worldwide, though.

*nods* My wife's arrived at around 8am - although she nearly didn't get it, since we were in bed and I considered ignoring the door buzzer.

I suspect she would've gone out and got a copy at midnight if my mother hadn't ordered it for her from Amazon months ago.
